Rim, Tire, and Inner Tube: How to Replace Them on an All-Terrain Wheel
This guide walks you through replacing the rim, tire, and inner tube on your all-terrain wheel. Keeping these components in top shape ensures your board's performance and safety.
Here's how to replace a rim, tire, or inner tube on an all-terrain wheel. Your board's performance and safety depend on these parts being in good condition.
- Tire wear: Tires wear down over time, and this can become dangerous.
- Defective inner tube: A damaged inner tube can lead to punctures.
- Damaged rim: A compromised rim can affect your board's stability.
- New rim, tire, and/or inner tube
- 1/8 Allen key (this comes with your Y-Tool when you get your board)
Release all the air from the inner tube. This makes disassembly much easier.
Use the Allen key to remove the six screws holding the two rim halves together. Keep the wheel flat on a table to prevent the nuts from falling out.
Separate the rim halves: Keep the wheel on the table as you separate the two halves. Set the top half aside, leaving the screws in their holes.
Release the bottom half: Push to free the tire from the rim's bottom half.
Remove the inner tube: If your inner tube is still in good condition, you can reuse it. Otherwise, swap it out for a new one.
Install the new tire: Inflate the new inner tube with a little air to give it shape; this makes it easier to fit into the tire. Then, place it inside the new tire. Make sure the inner tube doesn't protrude from the tire. This prevents pinching when you reassemble the rim, which could cause a puncture.
Align the valve: Line up the inner tube's valve with the notch in the rim.
Assemble the rim halves: Place the top half of the rim, aligning the notch with the valve. Drop the screws so they fall into the holes on the other side of the rim.
Star pattern tightening: Tighten the screws in a star pattern. This ensures uniform fastening. Double-check that the nuts are flush and securely tightened.
Inflate to 3 bar: Inflate the tire to 3 bar. This gives you the best range and performance.
By following these steps, you can easily replace the rim, tire, and inner tube on your electric skateboard's all-terrain wheel.
