Tips for Electric Skateboard Beginners

Electric skateboarding delivers a smooth, fun ride that combines the best parts of several board sports. Like any sport, it takes time to master the basics and learn how to ride safely.

The electric skateboard is known for its smooth, fun ride that brings together the best of several board sports. Like any sport, you'll need to spend some time learning the basics to ensure you can ride safely. Here are a few tips for electric skateboard beginners.

How to Ride an Electric Skateboard

Electric skateboards build on the core concepts of classic skateboarding, integrating elements from snowboarding and surfing – which is why we affectionately call it the infinite wave.

Before you even step on the board, the first rule of thumb is to start slow and smooth. Accelerate, lean, and brake with gradual, controlled movements. Always give yourself ample space and anticipate your braking distances, allowing for a generous margin of error.

The second crucial thing to remember when you ride is how important your weight placement is. To accelerate, lean forward with your head aligned over your front foot. To brake, put your weight on your back foot. How far you lean forward or back should adjust with your speed.

Take your time getting used to these feelings and enjoy the ride!

Choosing the Best Electric Skateboard for Beginners

A good electric skateboard for beginners combines high-quality construction a newcomer can rely on with a board that isn't intimidating to use. Fortunately, at Evolve, no matter which board you choose, they all meet these criteria. Each board is made with the best materials available and features four ride modes, including a beginner mode for smooth acceleration and braking.

Prioritize Safety: Gear Up!

It's common to see riders in the traditional skate world without protective gear or a helmet. But remember, those riders aren't hitting speeds of up to 50 km/h – you are.

So, make sure you gear up properly. This means wearing a helmet at a minimum. As a beginner, we also highly recommend knee pads, elbow pads, and even skate gloves as a solid foundation for your protective gear.

Be Visible on the Road

Evolve electric skateboards are great during the day, but night riding is a whole different feeling.

To see where you're going and to be seen by others, it's a good idea to equip your board (and yourself) with some lights for those darker hours. There are many lighting options available from Evolve to help you. Front, rear, and side lights can all be customized to your preferences.

Look Where You Want to Go

As a beginner electric skateboarder, making mistakes is part of the game. At some point during your ride, you'll probably take a turn and feel like you're going too fast. When that happens, you have two choices: either bail and hope you don't get hurt, or lean further into the turn. If you look at the outside of the turn, or at the obstacle you really don't want to hit, it's already too late. But if you look to the inside of the turn, where you want to go, you'll be surprised at the turns you can make.

The reasons are both mental and scientific. Mentally, if you look in the direction of the turn you want to take, you'll feel more comfortable leaning into it. Scientifically, your head is heavy (about 5 kg), and if it's not tilted towards the inside of the turn, there's a considerable amount of weight working against you when you need it most.
